Raw 1899, West Texas’ premier art lounge located in historic downtown San Angelo, will present an art show and sale titled, “Untamed,” September 26 to October 19, 2024, featuring works by Boerne, Texas artist Paula Lay.
The Opening Reception will be Thursday, September 26, 5:30 to 8 p.m. and the public is invited to attend free of charge and meet Paula.
Born in West Texas, Paula’s love of art and animals began in her childhood with a set of Encyclopedia Brittanica. She spent hours studying the illustrative plates of birds and beasts and trying to draw them. “I work to present animals in a way that makes them both familiar and mysterious,” she says. “Wild things have a dignity and allure that keep me coming back to them as subjects time and time again.”
Paula’s paintings are colorful and varied, from the delicate to the bold as she celebrates the unique personalities of her subjects. And while viewers look at her paintings, the eyes of her animals look back, reminding all that animals are watchers, too.
Raw 1899 hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is open for brunch 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
